The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association was founded by Bob Cacchione in 1967 at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The IHSA is made up of 29 regions, 9 zones, and over 300 colleges. Each region has up to 10 horse shows in the fall and spring combined.

IHSA Horse Shows:

The host college of a horse show provides the horses used for the competition. Each rider is assigned a random horse through a 'draw' by a non-affiliated person (such as the EMT). The rider is given a short explanation of their assigned horse. Riders are not allowed to practice on their assigned horse and can only mount when their class is about to begin. This method tests a rider's skill in competing on an unfamiliar horse. In the IHSA, the horses may be entered in either jumping classes or flat classes.  In any given competition, there are 8 undergraduate classes and 4 Alumni classes. Any full time undergraduate can compete in the IHSA for up to 4 years and any year alumni of the IHSA can compete in an alumni class.
