GETTYSBURG COLLEGE EQUESTRIAN TEAM
frequently asked questions
Do I need to tryout?
No! As this is a club sport, tryouts are not necessary and everyone is welcome!
Do I need previous experience?
No previous experience necessary! We have riders who have never ridden until joining the team, to those who are highly experienced and everyone is welcome! In fact, in order to have a well rounded team, it is preferable to have riders at all ability levels.
Do I need my own horse / tack?
No! During lessons you will ride a horse from Middle Creek Stables and use tack that is supplied there as well. At shows you will ride a horse that is supplied by the host college (See "About IHSA" under "General Info")
Do I need to have a car?
Having a car is not a requirement! If you do not have a car, you will put in a lesson group with a teammate that does. The team provides transportation to shows via college rented vans that will be driven by a team member who has been specially certified by the college. However: being a member of the team does allow you to have a car on campus as a First Year student.
Is it required that I show?
No! You can be a club member that does not compete, but still take lessons. Club members are able to upgrade to being a competing team member at anytime. It is important to note that lesson space is limited, and lesson priority is given to competing members.

How do we get to the shows?
I want to show, but do I need to buy all the apparel?
Not necessarily. We all have shared show clothes, helmets, gloves, and boots during shows. However, you should coordinate borrowing apparel with a team member prior to a show, because it is not a guarantee that another rider will have your specific size.
How much does it cost?
It depends. As a club sport, all team members (club and show members) must pay an annual team due of $30. In addition, weekly 1-hour riding lessons cost $50 and show members are expected to commit to approximately 10 lessons per semester. Show members must also register for an annual IHSA membership, which is $45. Show members must also pay a $45 entry fee per class.
